NYC Urban Sketchers welcomes you to
SKETCH TURKEY!
Turkey is a modern country with a captivating blend of antiquity and contemporary of both Eastern and Western cultures which makes it a popular travel destination for savvy travellers longing to experience the exotic.
For our morning sketching adventure, E.J., Cecilia, and Shawne will transport you to the other-worldly wind-sculpted fairy chimneys, cave villages, and rock castles of
Cappadocia, in Central Turkey. There’s a reason that you can find hundreds of hot air balloons soaring over its skies every sunrise and sunset—and why it’s on so many bucket lists.
In the afternoon, you’ll be escorted to the ancient—and utterly enchanting—city of Istanbul. The skyline alone is worthy of a thousand sketches. Soak in the breathtaking architecture of The
Hagia Sophia (“Holy Wisdom”). Marvel in and around the
Ortaköy Mosque, situated in one of the most picturesque settings in all of Istanbul. Or, wander the
Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, for some exotic Turkish delights.
Short Histories of Cappadocia and Istanbul -
by GOOGLECappadocia, a semi-arid region in central Turkey, is known for its distinctive “fairy chimneys,” tall, cone-shaped rock formations clustered in Monks Valley, Göreme and elsewhere. Other notables sites include Bronze Age homes carved into valley walls by troglodytes (cave dwellers) and later used as refuges by early Christians. The 100m-deep Ihlara Canyon houses numerous rock-face churches. ―UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription: 1985
Istanbul is a major city in Turkey that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait. Its Old City reflects cultural influences of the many empires that once ruled here. In the Sultanahmet district, the open-air, Roman-era Hippodrome was for centuries the site of chariot races, and Egyptian obelisks also remain. The iconic Byzantine Hagia Sophia features a soaring 6th-century dome and rare Christian mosaicsExternal LinksVideo Introduction to Cappadociahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0ul2X6Crx0Once Upon a Time in Cappadocia - Turkish Airlineshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLmYGHYtGkoHistory of Cappadocia (text)https://www.tourquia.com/en/cappadocia-information/(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧Things to do in Cappadociahttps://www.wanderlustchloe.com/cappadocia-things-to-do/(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ Istanbul Tourist Attractionshttps://www.planetware.com/tourist-attractions-/istanbul-tr-is-i.htmCappadocia Hot Air Balloon Ride-Photoshttps://line.17qq.com/articles/igiigggbz.htmlBeautiful Places in Turkey
